Moments of Fame

As I mentioned a while back, Greener Pastures hosted the Carnival of Personal Finance this week, where Funny’s question about what you’ll do if credit card companies decide to take out their rancor over the new federal legislation mandating slightly fairer prices on freeloaders like you and me who pay off their balances each month. In addition to the great memorial day theme, this carnival featured many interesting posts. Spend on Life’s alert about the use of sensitive information in a currently popular Twitter game is an eyebrow-raiser. At Moolanomy, Pinyo points out that the key to financial freedom is to earn more and spend less…easier said than done, Pinyo! ;-) Man vs. Debt advocates a debt tsunami approach to the escape from debt serfdom (uhm…or surfdom: even if you’re already free of debt, check out the photo at this post: ohhh that tube!).

Walletpop hosted the third edition of the new Carnival of Money Stories series and kindly included Funny’s 109 in the Shade squib. LOL! You’ve gotta read J. Money’s great “love letter” to the stores where he and the Mrs. used to hang out. Speaking of Man vs. Debt and not to overplug that site…Ask Mr. Credit card interviews the site’s proprietor, Adam, who—hang onto your hat—over 15 months knocked down a debt load of 80 grand by $29,000, socked away another $13,000 in savings, and…holy mackerel! managed to do it on a $50,000 household income! Add to that, the guy is only about 25 years old. Elsewhere, Free from Broke reminds us that a good way to foil petty credit-card theft is to keep your receipts.

The Festival of Frugality also celebrated Memorial Day, hosted at Suburban Dollar. Funny’s encomium to small, steady savings appears here. The Happy Rock shows off some Red Green-style do-it-yourself fixes, featuring the home handyman’s secret weapon (duct tape!). The Well Run Dry  has an interesting discussion of how soil contamination affects urban gardeners, and what might be done about it. And sadly, M is for Money is brought to contemplate the high cost of dying by the recent passing of her grandmother.
